Japan to empower Tanzanian youth in construction sector

By The Respondent Reporter

Tanzania and Japan have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop human resources in the construction sector, creating new opportunities for Tanzanian youth.

The agreement was signed by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, and Japan’s Deputy Minister for Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (International Projects), Mr. Kenichi Ogasawara, in Yokohama during the TICAD9 conference on 20 August 2025.

Through this partnership, Tanzanian youth in engineering and construction will gain access to Japanese technology and expertise in durable, climate-resilient infrastructure.

The initiative aims to equip them with technical skills, enabling self-employment and access to jobs in Japanese construction companies operating in Tanzania.

The MoU will also strengthen youth and private sector participation in implementing Tanzania’s 2050 National Development Vision, focusing on quality infrastructure as a cornerstone of economic growth.

Tanzania is the first country in Africa to enter such an agreement with Japan in the construction sector. Japan has previously signed similar partnerships with several Southeast Asian countries, where the adoption of its advanced infrastructure technology has significantly driven economic development.
