The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the nomination process for candidates contesting in this year’s General Election will conclude tomorrow, marking a critical milestone in Tanzania’s 2025 electoral calendar.
The process, which began on August 9 with the distribution of nomination forms to presidential and vice-presidential aspirants, will culminate with official nominations taking place at INEC headquarters in Njedengwa, Dodoma, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
In a statement issued today, the Commission said preparations for the exercise have been finalized.
“We urge all candidates who collected forms for the presidential and vice-presidential positions to ensure timely submission at INEC offices, while those seeking parliamentary and council seats should report to their respective constituency or ward offices,” the Commission stated.
The nomination of parliamentary candidates will be handled by constituency election supervisors, while ward-level nominations for councilors will be overseen by assistant supervisors across Tanzania Mainland.
Upon completion of the process, INEC will publicly display the names of approved candidates. Presidential and vice-presidential lists will be posted at INEC offices in Dodoma, parliamentary candidates at constituency offices, and ward candidates at respective local offices for public inspection.
The Commission also reminded political parties and aspirants to strictly observe the guidelines and timelines outlined in official notifications.
Tomorrow’s exercise falls under the provisions of the Elections Act No. 1 of 2024 and the 2025 General Election Regulations, which govern nomination procedures for all elective positions.
The nominations set the stage for what is expected to be one of the most competitive general elections in recent years, with campaigns officially kicking off soon after the Commission declares the final list of candidates.
