Ilala District sets strategies to boost government revenue

The Ilala District Tax Advisory Committee has laid out fresh strategies to raise government revenue, aiming to fast-track development projects in the district and contribute to national growth.

Meeting in Dar es Salaam on August 2, 2025, the committee led by Ilala District Commissioner and Chairperson Edward Mpogolo resolved to strengthen collaboration between the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), local government authorities, and the business community.

Organized by TRA through its Kariakoo Tax Region, the meeting focused on practical solutions to expand the tax base and improve voluntary compliance.

One key decision was to enhance taxpayer education and ensure businesses clearly understand their obligations and the benefits of timely tax payment.

“By working together TRA, local authorities, and our business partners we can build a stronger, more self-reliant Ilala. Revenue is not just about figures; it’s about better roads, schools, and health services,” said Mpogolo.

Participants also received a briefing on changes to tax laws for the 2025/2026 financial year. The presentation, delivered by CPA Paul Walalaze, TRA’s Manager for Taxpayer Education, outlined key legal updates and how they affect different sectors.

The session brought together several stakeholders, including Ilala District Executive Director Ms. Charanda Makwiro, Kariakoo Tax Region Manager Ms. Kabula Mwemezi, and Kariakoo Traders Association Chairperson Mr. Severin Mushi, accompanied by fellow business leaders.

TRA and district officials underscored the importance of mutual trust and transparent engagement as pillars of improved revenue collection.

The committee pledged to increase outreach efforts, create space for dialogue with traders, and promote a fair and enabling business environment.

The outcomes of the meeting are expected to help Ilala maximize its revenue potential while ensuring services and infrastructure keep pace with the district’s growing population and economic activity.
