The Minister of Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Camillus Wambura, to intensify online patrols to combat criminals who use social media to create unrest and threaten peace in Tanzania.

The directive was given on Tuesday, August 6, 2025, during the official opening of the new Daraja B Police Station in Sanya Juu, Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region.

The station is part of the government’s efforts to improve police infrastructure and boost security operations.

“Just as regular patrols are conducted on the ground, we must strengthen our online presence to detect and prevent financial crimes and activities aimed at disturbing the peace via social media,” Bashungwa said.

The Minister also urged police to continue enforcing President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s directives on fighting crime, controlling reckless drivers, and removing unroadworthy vehicles that cause accidents.

He called on the police to work closely with the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to identify dangerous road spots prone to accidents, conduct thorough investigations, and allocate funds for lasting solutions.

Bashungwa further instructed the police to engage motorcycle taxi operators (boda boda) at district and regional levels, educating them on road safety and partnering to reduce traffic accidents.

He emphasized the importance of cooperation among all security agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs to maintain peace, especially as the country approaches the 2025 General Election and in its aftermath.

In his remarks, IGP Camillus Wambura appealed to citizens to cooperate with the police in safeguarding peace and security. He assured the public that Tanzania remains a safe country.

Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Nurdin Babu, noted that the new police station was constructed with government funds, complemented by contributions from local communities in Siha District.
