Tanzania’s Speaker of the National Assembly and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Tulia Ackson, joined hundreds of sports enthusiasts, government leaders, and fitness clubs from across the country for the "Jog for Tanzania" festival held Saturday in Mbeya.
The event, which brought together runners from across the region and beyond, began at Kabwe Bus Stand and culminated at Sokoine Stadium the city’s main arena where a series of activities and celebrations took place.
Dr. Ackson, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Mbeya Urban Constituency, took part in the jog alongside a diverse mix of participants, including senior government officials, youth groups, and representatives from various jogging clubs.
Her presence highlighted the government's support for grassroots initiatives that promote health, national unity, and community engagement.
Addressing participants at the stadium, Dr. Ackson praised the festival for fostering patriotism and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
“Jogging may seem simple, but it is a powerful way to bring people together, across generations and backgrounds, for a common purpose the well-being and unity of our nation,” she said.
The "Jog for Tanzania" festival, which has grown in popularity in recent years, aims to promote physical fitness, social cohesion, and national pride. Organisers say the initiative reflects a broader vision of using sport and wellness as tools for social development.
The event also featured music, cultural displays, and public addresses that echoed the importance of youth participation in national development and the role of sport in nurturing peace and resilience.
With its scenic routes and enthusiastic public support, Mbeya once again proved a fitting host for the festival a symbol of the country's growing embrace of sports as a vehicle for social transformation.
