Renowned Tanzanian performing artist and National Arts Council (BASATA) Ambassador, Mrisho Issa Mpoto popularly known as Mjomba is mourning the death of his wife, Mariam Waziri.
Mariam passed away earlier today, July 15, 2025, in Dar es Salaam. The family has confirmed that the funeral will take place tomorrow, July 16, at 4:00 PM at the family burial grounds in Yombo. A wake is currently being held at the couple’s home in Kijichi.
Breaking the news on his official Instagram account, Mpoto wrote: “Hard to believe I have lost my wife.” The post has since drawn an outpouring of sympathy and condolences from fans, fellow artists, and public figures across the country.
In a statement, the leadership of BASATA conveyed their condolences, saying they stand in solidarity with their ambassador during this difficult time.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Mpoto and his family. The nation grieves with him,” the statement read.
Mpoto is one of Tanzania’s most celebrated spoken word artists and musicians, known for using art as a vehicle for social change.
