Zanzibar eyes expansion as Regional Air Transport Hub

Zanzibar is strategically positioning itself to become a premier regional hub for air transport services through significant infrastructure investments, President Hussein Ali Mwinyi declared on June 12, 2025.

Speaking at the opening of the African Aviation and Tourism Services Conference (AviaDev Africa 2025) at the Golden Tulip Hotel adjacent to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, President Mwinyi outlined government plans to expand existing airport facilities and construct a new international airport in Pemba.

“These developments are critical to enhancing Zanzibar’s connectivity, attracting increased airline operations, and boosting tourism inflows,” said Mwinyi.

The expansion of Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and the new Pemba airport project form the cornerstone of efforts to open Zanzibar to more regional and international carriers.

Air transport remains a key driver of Zanzibar’s economy, underpinning approximately 30% of the archipelago’s GDP through tourism a sector identified as a core economic pillar.

The government is actively partnering with private sector stakeholders and airlines to elevate operational efficiency, safety standards, and service quality at airports.

President Mwinyi also highlighted recent tourism growth fueled by initiatives such as Tanzania’s Royal Tour promotional film, which has showcased Zanzibar’s cultural heritage and attractions to global audiences.

The government’s broader strategy includes leveraging Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to finance airport upgrades, tightening regulatory frameworks, and enhancing security protocols all aimed at attracting more carriers and facilitating smoother travel experiences.

AviaDev Africa 2025, running from June 11-13, has drawn over 530 delegates from aviation and tourism sectors, representing 47 African airlines, underscoring the continent’s growing focus on aviation as a catalyst for economic development.
