The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Mpango, departed the country today, June 18, 2025, for Rome, Italy, where he will represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at a major international summit focused on development cooperation between Africa, the Government of Italy, and the European Union.
The summit, scheduled to take place on June 20, 2025, will bring together heads of state and government leaders under two strategic frameworks: Italy’s Mattei Plan and the European Union’s Global Gateway Initiative.
This summit presents a significant opportunity for Tanzania to strengthen its international partnerships and access new avenues of support for national development.
Through the Mattei Plan, the Italian government aims to enhance collaboration with African nations by promoting sustainable investments, technology transfer, and capacity building across key economic sectors.
In parallel, the EU Global Gateway is a flagship initiative by the European Union to invest €300 billion globally by 2027 €150 billion of which is earmarked for Africa.
The initiative focuses on building modern infrastructure and improving essential services in areas such as digital connectivity, renewable energy, transportation, healthcare, education, and scientific research.
While in Rome, Vice President Mpango is also scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with leaders from other countries and international organizations.
These meetings are intended to deepen Tanzania’s diplomatic ties, attract strategic investments, and promote cooperation that supports the country's development goals.
His participation underscores the government’s commitment to positioning Tanzania as an active and engaged player on the global stage.
The outcomes of this summit are expected to translate into real benefits for Tanzanian citizens, including improved infrastructure, access to quality services, and increased economic opportunities.
As the country continues its journey toward inclusive and sustainable development, such international engagements play a vital role in accelerating progress and improving the well-being of all Tanzanians.
