Dar es Salaam- The Government has affirmed that preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled to take place this August, are progressing steadily, with the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium now more than 90 percent ready to host the tournament.
Speaking yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and Government Spokesperson Mr. Gerson Msigwa, said the stadium's pitch has been fully prepared for the competition and will undergo replacement once the tournament concludes.
He noted that the remaining task is the installation of 22,000 additional seats. Already, 40,000 seats have been fitted, all designed in the colours of the national flag to reflect the spirit of patriotism and unity.
“A multi-sectoral committee has been established to oversee the entire preparation process, including sports infrastructure. The committee is working diligently to ensure the tournament is organised with the highest level of professionalism,” said Mr. Msigwa.
He added that a delegation of experts from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is currently in the country and has expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.
Providing updates on other venues, Mr. Msigwa said construction at the Arusha Stadium is progressing well and has reached 45 percent completion. The venue is expected to be ready by April next year.
In Zanzibar, preparations are also well advanced. The New Amaan Stadium has been confirmed as fully ready to host matches during the tournament.
The CHAN tournament, which features national teams composed exclusively of players active in their domestic leagues, is expected to draw significant regional and international attention, marking a major milestone in Tanzania’s growing reputation as a host for major sporting events.
