The Uhuru Torch has officially entered the Lushoto District Council today, after being handed over from Bumbuli District Council.

The torch will be run across a distance of 112.8 kilometers, covering two divisions, four wards, and 23 villages. During its journey, the torch will inspect and inaugurate development projects valued at over TZS 1.8 billion.

Speaking shortly after the handover ceremony, Lushoto District Commissioner Zephania Sumaye stated that this year's Uhuru Torch theme is: “Participate Peacefully and Calmly in the 2025 General Elections.”

The theme reflects the national commitment to encouraging citizens to engage in the democratic process peacefully.

“We have received the Uhuru Torch fully prepared. This year’s theme is a call for every Tanzanian to take part in the upcoming general elections with peace, wisdom, and calm,” said Sumaye.

He added that the torch will inspect and launch seven development projects spanning various sectors, including education, health, water, and infrastructure, as a testament to the government’s commitment to serving its citizens particularly those in rural areas.

“In total, the projects to be inspected are worth TZS 1.8 billion. This showcases the significant efforts being made to ensure development reaches all citizens,” the District Commissioner emphasized.

Sumaye also urged the public to come out in large numbers to welcome the torch and to maintain unity and peace as the 2025 general elections approach.

The Uhuru Torch is a national symbol of unity and development, which has been traversing the country annually since 1961 with the aim of promoting progress, social accountability, national cohesion, and more recently peaceful participation in democratic elections.
