The Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on the Implementation of the Generation Equality Programme, Angela Kairuki, has commended women in Iringa Region for their proactive use of government-backed economic empowerment platforms to improve their livelihoods.
Speaking during a working tour of Iringa on June 19, 2025, Kairuki praised the creativity, unity, and determination of women who have embraced productive projects under the Generation Equality Programme.
"I am impressed by the solidarity, innovation, and energy shown by women in Iringa. Their efforts reflect the impact that well-structured government initiatives can have when fully embraced by the community," said Kairuki.
The visit, organized by the National Committee, aimed to assess the implementation of the programme at the regional level, monitor progress in income-generating initiatives, and identify both achievements and challenges.
The committee visited various projects run by women’s groups, youth initiatives, and associations of persons with disabilities.
Hon. Kairuki urged more women, young people, and persons with disabilities to take advantage of the numerous opportunities made available by the government to enhance their economic standing.
“This is the time to fully utilise government support programmes. These initiatives are designed to uplift citizens economically, and we must ensure they reach every deserving individual,” she said.
Deputy Speaker of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and committee member, Mgeni Hassan Juma, said the tour forms part of the national effort to translate gender equality from policy into real change at the grassroots level.
“This visit is not just symbolic. It is a critical step towards ensuring that gender equality is implemented meaningfully in every part of the country,” she said.
Juliana Kibonde, Assistant Director of the Gender Development Department at the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working closely with local communities.
“The ministry will continue to collaborate with women, youth, and people with disabilities to ensure that government empowerment programmes are accessible, inclusive, and impactful,” said Kibonde.
Beneficiaries of the Generation Equality Platform expressed their appreciation to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for launching and overseeing the programme with dedication and vision.
Many women said the initiative had opened new economic doors, helping them to move beyond subsistence living and start building sustainable livelihoods through entrepreneurship and collective action.
