The Minister of State in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government, Mohamed Mchengerwa, has called on teachers across the country to demonstrate patriotism and uphold professionalism in order to enhance student academic performance.

Mchengerwa made the remarks during a meeting with teachers and education stakeholders in Rufiji District, held at the Bibi Titi Mohamed Girls’ Secondary School hall.

During the event, he was also honored with a special award in recognition of his significant contributions to the education sector in Rufiji.

"The Government has made considerable investments in improving the learning environment and infrastructure. What remains is for us, as educators, to lead with patriotism and commitment to raise the quality of education at all levels," Mchengerwa emphasized.

He further urged teachers to remain aware of their responsibilities, noting that the Government will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any teacher or education officer who is found to be negligent in their duties.

According to a report presented to the Minister by Rufiji District Executive Director Mr. Simon Berege, the number of students completing Standard Seven has increased from 3,135 in 2020 to 3,715 in 2024.

Additionally, the number of pre-primary and primary schools has risen from 48 in 2021 to 63 in 2025, marking an increase of 15 schools equivalent to a 31.3% growth.

The number of classrooms has also grown significantly, from 377 in 2021 to 566 in 2025, an increase of 189 classrooms or 50.1%.

In the recent UMITASHUMTA regional competitions, Rufiji Town Council performed exceptionally well, securing first place in football, netball, and athletics, and second place in handball placing the council second overall in the tournament.

During the event, Mchengerwa awarded trophies to the winning schools and later received a donation of 50 desks from CRDB Bank.
