Police in Mbeya Region are holding a first-year student from the Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) in connection with the fatal stabbing of a fellow student during an altercation at a local nightclub.

The suspect, identified as Emilian Duzu, 21, is accused of stabbing third-year student Gerald Said, 22, in the early hours of June 14, 2025. The incident occurred at Mbeya Pazuri, a popular entertainment venue in Mbeya City.

Confirming the incident, Mbeya Regional Police Commander Benjamin Kuzaga told reporters that the fatal confrontation is believed to have been triggered by excessive alcohol consumption.

“Initial investigations suggest the two students were involved in a dispute inside the club, believed to have been fueled by heavy drinking. Security personnel at the venue intervened and separated them,” Commander Kuzaga said.

He added that the suspect later went outside to the parking area, where the confrontation allegedly resumed after the victim followed him. It was at this point that Mr. Duzu is believed to have stabbed Mr. Said with a sharp object.

The victim was rushed to the Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at around 1:00 p.m. the same day due to the severity of his injuries.

Commander Kuzaga stressed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspect remains in custody as police prepare to bring formal charges.

The Regional Police have issued a stern warning against criminal behavior, particularly in academic institutions, urging students to remain focused on their education and avoid risky behaviors, including alcohol abuse.

“There is no room for criminal activity in our society. We urge all students to conduct themselves responsibly. The police will not hesitate to take legal action against those who break the law,” Commander Kuzaga emphasized. The university is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
