Dodoma. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa yesterday unveiled state-of-the-art drilling rigs and geological research equipment designed to empower small-scale miners, in a move hailed as a milestone in transforming Tanzania’s mining landscape.

The equipment, handed over through the State Mining Corporation (Stamico), was launched during a high-level ceremony held at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre in the capital, Dodoma.

Speaking at the event, Mr Majaliwa said the initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment under President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership to empower small-scale miners who contribute significantly to job creation, individual income growth and national economic development.

“This is part of President Samia’s broader vision to ensure that small-scale miners are not left behind. By giving them access to modern technology and reliable geological data, we are improving productivity, ensuring safety, and increasing their contribution to the national economy,” the Prime Minister said.

The equipment package includes high-capacity drilling rigs and advanced mineral exploration tools, which will support miners in identifying mineral-rich zones with greater precision, thereby reducing risks and operational costs.

According to officials, the tools will be deployed across several regions where small-scale mining is dominant, complementing government efforts to formalize and professionalize the sub-sector.

Stamico’s Acting Director General, Dr Venance Mwasse, said the corporation is committed to supporting miners beyond equipment provision, including training on how to operate and maintain the rigs as well as offering technical support during mineral exploration.

“We believe this support will enhance efficiency, reduce environmental degradation, and ensure that miners gain more from their efforts,” Dr Mwasse noted.

The launch comes at a time when Tanzania is intensifying efforts to maximise the value of its mineral wealth and broaden participation across all levels of the value chain.

The government has prioritised small-scale mining in recent policy and investment interventions, recognising it as a catalyst for inclusive growth.

Mr Majaliwa urged small-scale miners to embrace the support and work closely with government agencies to operate within formal structures, pay taxes, and adhere to safety and environmental standards.

“With these tools, the government expects to see a transformation in how small-scale mining is conducted moving from rudimentary techniques to a more modern, sustainable and commercially viable model,” he said.

Tanzania’s small-scale mining sector employs hundreds of thousands and contributes significantly to gold, gemstone and industrial mineral production.

Experts say enhancing the sector’s efficiency will not only improve livelihoods but also strengthen the country’s mining-driven economy.

The Prime Minister also toured the equipment on display and interacted with small-scale miners and stakeholders in the mining ecosystem.
