Lindi Jumbo, a leading graphite mining company operating in Tanzania’s Lindi region, has confirmed its capacity to produce 40,000 tonnes of graphite each year, alongside comprehensive processing operations.
The announcement was made today by Paul Shauri, the company’s Public Relations Manager, during the ongoing mining and investment exhibition in Ruangwa District, Lindi.
According to Shauri, the mine extracts various grades of graphite, including Super Jumbo, Jumbo Large, and Jumbo Fine categories based on the size of the graphite flakes.
A recent geological survey has identified estimated graphite reserves of approximately 5.5 million tonnes, which are expected to sustain production for the next 24 years.
The company currently employs over 290 workers, with 43% sourced from communities adjacent to the mine, 52% recruited from other parts of Tanzania, and 5% comprising international staff.
India remains the primary market for Lindi Jumbo’s graphite exports. However, the company is actively expanding its processing capabilities to meet increasing demand in other key markets such as China and Germany.
Graphite’s growing industrial importance is underscored by its diverse applications — from manufacturing vehicle batteries, particularly for fuel-powered cars, to brake linings and lubricants for high-temperature machinery.
Additionally, graphite is instrumental in producing crucibles for the steel industry and durable solar panels, thanks to its high heat resistance.
Lindi Jumbo’s operations mark a significant milestone in Tanzania’s mining sector, highlighting the country’s potential to become a major player in the global graphite supply chain.
