The District Administrative Secretary (DAS) for Kaliua, Mr. Raymond Mweli, has said there can be no meaningful development or improved quality of life without good health, stressing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.
Speaking on Wednesday during the World Environment Day 2025 commemorations in Kaliua, Mr. Mweli underscored the importance of environmental conservation to public health, livelihoods, and long-term development.
“No development, no better life without good health. It is our duty to continue protecting our environment and to educate one another on its importance,” he said.
This year’s global theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” resonated strongly in the region, which faces growing environmental challenges, including deforestation and land degradation.
Mr. Mweli called on residents, especially youth, schools, and local leaders, to take action by planting trees, managing waste properly, and raising awareness on the impacts of climate change.
The event featured tree planting, student exhibitions on eco-friendly projects, and public awareness campaigns led by environmental stakeholders.
Kaliua, like many rural areas, depends on natural resources for farming and livestock. Officials warned that continued environmental neglect could worsen poverty and health outcomes in the community.
Mr. Mweli urged continued cooperation between government, civil society, and citizens to restore degraded land and safeguard natural ecosystems for future generations.
World Environment Day was marked across the country with similar activities aimed at encouraging sustainable land use and strengthening resilience to drought and climate threats.
