Govt extends Journalist registration deadline ahead of General Election

By The Respondent Reporter

The Government, through the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB), has extended the deadline for journalist registration via the TAI-Habari system to June 28, 2025, in a move aimed at strengthening professional accountability and ensuring compliance ahead of the forthcoming General Election.

The extension is intended to give room for journalists who have completed the registration process but have yet to pay accreditation fees, as well as those who have initiated but not finalized their registration. Eligible individuals are required to complete the process through the official portal: https://taihabari.jab.go.tz.

Under Government Notice No. 18 of 2017, registration is compulsory for all practicing journalists including editors, broadcasters, photographers, freelancers, producers, journalism students, and qualified foreign correspondents with academic qualifications starting from a diploma level and above.

JAB strongly urges all media professionals to use this extended period to fulfill legal requirements and obtain accreditation.

The board made it clear that failure to register by the new deadline will result in immediate disqualification from journalistic practice, as stipulated under Section 19 of the Media Services Act (Cap. 229).

In a firm warning, JAB stated that anyone found submitting forged certificates or false information during registration will face legal consequences under criminal law.

The board will continue verifying academic qualifications and issuing official press cards to those who meet the criteria even after the registration window closes.

This registration initiative forms part of broader efforts to establish an Independent Media Council, in line with Section 24 of the Media Services Act.

As the country gears up for elections later this year, the board has reminded journalists who are contesting political positions to step aside from newsroom roles.

According to Regulation 12(g) of the Political Parties Election Broadcasting Regulations (GN No. 775 of 2020), journalist-candidates are prohibited from engaging in any media duties during the election cycle.

Employers are also directed to enforce this rule to avoid conflicts of interest and uphold public confidence in media institutions during the electoral process.
