There is a growing call for the Tanzanian government to invest in building community swimming pools nationwide to provide young people with the opportunity to learn swimming and participate in competitive sports. Currently, swimming remains largely accessible only to a privileged few, especially those enrolled in international schools.
Nelson Lema, the organizer of the Swahili Talent Swimming Competition, spoke to The Respondent online from Dar es Salaam, emphasizing the urgent need to expand swimming facilities across the country.
According to Lema, most existing swimming pools are concentrated within international schools, limiting access for the vast majority of talented young Tanzanians who attend public schools or live in areas lacking such infrastructure.
“Swimming is more than just a sport; it promotes physical health, confidence, and discipline while opening doors to national and international competitions,” Lema said. “Yet, many young people with great potential cannot pursue swimming due to the shortage of accessible pools.”
Lema appealed directly to the government, particularly under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to prioritize the construction of swimming pools in public schools and communities.
He believes that investing in this infrastructure will democratize the sport, making it inclusive and accessible to children from all walks of life, thus helping discover and nurture new talent throughout Tanzania.
“Currently, many youths spend their free time on the streets because of the lack of safe recreational spaces and sporting facilities,” Lema added. “By investing in swimming pools, the government can provide healthy, constructive outlets that foster both physical and social development.”
His call highlights the urgent need for increased support for swimming as a sport in Tanzania, reflecting a broader movement toward inclusive sports development that reaches every community.
