Digital mining opportunities open new economic doors for Tanzanians

Tanzania’s mining sector is undergoing a digital transformation that is unlocking new economic potential and creating opportunities for citizens across the country.

From small-scale mining to value addition and related services, the sector is becoming a driver of inclusive growth, thanks to strategic government reforms and technology adoption.

Speaking at the Public Service Week commemorations held at Chinangali Grounds in Dodoma, Mr. Ashen Mwambage, Mine Inspector from the Directorate of Mine and Environmental Inspection at the Mining Commission, called on Tanzanians to seize the growing opportunities in the sector.

“The government has done tremendous work to ensure that every Tanzanian can access and benefit from mining opportunities. Through the establishment of mineral markets in various regions, we’ve ensured price transparency, increased government revenue, and guaranteed fair returns for miners,” he said.

Regions such as Geita, Shinyanga, Mara, and Mbeya are examples of how communities are tapping into small-scale mining to raise household incomes and stimulate local economies. According to Mr. Mwambage, participation in mining-related activities has significantly contributed to reducing poverty and empowering citizens at the grassroots level.

The government’s push for digital solutions is also reshaping the sector. Modern technologies are now being deployed in mineral exploration, extraction, and processing to improve efficiency, ensure safety particularly for small-scale miners and protect the environment.

The government continues to offer training to miners to ensure that they are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in the evolving landscape.

“We should not just export raw minerals. We must focus on local value addition, which has already started to create jobs, promote entrepreneurship, and raise the national income,” Mr. Mwambage added.

Beyond the mining sites, the ripple effect is being felt in sectors such as transport, logistics, accommodation, insurance, and financial services showcasing how the mining industry is becoming a strong pillar of the national economy.

The Mining Commission is encouraging Tanzanians, especially the youth, to engage with the sector responsibly by following legal and procedural guidelines.

By doing so, they can fully participate in and benefit from the country’s mineral wealth now more accessible than ever through digital platforms.

The message is clear: Tanzania’s mineral wealth is no longer hidden underground it is digitally mapped, regulated, and ready for citizens to harness.
