Tanzania Revenue Authority denies post-election tax hike rumors

By Alfred Zacharia

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has denied reports circulating on social media that it plans to increase income tax thresholds following the country’s upcoming elections.

According to the reports, the minimum taxable income would be raised to 700,000 Tanzanian shillings (approximately USD 270) after the general elections.

TRA said in a public notice on Wednesday (June 11) that the information is false and did not originate from the authority.

“The report did not come from TRA, has no basis in fact, and constitutes misinformation that should be ignored,” the statement read.

The authority emphasized that any changes to tax policies are made through formal legal processes and officially communicated to the public.

TRA urged taxpayers to verify information through its official channels. The authority provided toll-free numbers and WhatsApp contact information for public inquiries.

The statement was issued by TRA’s Department of Taxpayer Education and Communication.
