Tanzania’s women’s national football team, Twiga Stars, will face the Democratic Republic of Congo today in the first of two international friendly matches at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.
While listed as friendlies, these matches carry significant weight as the team intensifies preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Head coach Bakari Shime remains optimistic despite minor setbacks in the squad.
“The team is in great shape, apart from three players who won’t be available,” said Shime. “But that won’t affect our mission. These matches are part of our build-up to WAFCON.”
These back-to-back fixtures are more than practice they’re tactical experiments and mental tests.
“We’re using these games to assess our system, identify gaps, and improve cohesion,” Shime explained. “Playing DR Congo gives us a chance to compete with a physically strong and experienced side.”
With the second leg scheduled for June 3 at the same venue, the coaching staff sees the series as an opportunity to test the depth of the squad and sharpen competitive instincts.
“This isn’t just about winning,” said Shime. “It’s about learning under pressure and preparing for real tournament conditions.”
He added that the friendlies will directly influence decisions leading into WAFCON.
“After both matches, we’ll review performances and make informed adjustments. Every detail matters at this level.”
Shime emphasized that mental and physical readiness are equally important as tactical preparation.
“We want players who are mentally strong, able to adapt quickly, and handle pressure. That’s what we’re looking for.”
As Twiga Stars aim to make a strong showing at WAFCON, the DR Congo friendlies may prove to be defining moments in their campaign.
“We’re building something bigger than just a team we’re preparing a competitive unit for Africa,” Shime concluded. “These games are a step toward that goal.”
