Tanzania’s national under-18 girls’ handball team is set to face off against hosts Uganda in a crucial semifinal clash at the Zone V Africa Championship, currently taking place in Uganda.
Speaking to The Respondent Online on May 8, 2025, Tanzania head coach Kombo Kahawa expressed optimism about the team’s readiness and morale heading into the high-stakes match.
“Our preparations have been solid, and the energy within the team is very positive,” said Kahawa. “The girls are focused, motivated, and eager to secure a spot in the final. We believe in our ability to perform well.”
Kahawa acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized that the team is determined to achieve its goals despite strong competition in the tournament.
“This tournament is tough, but we are not backing down,” he said. “The semifinal against Uganda is a big test, especially since they’re the hosts. Still, our aim is clear to reach the final and represent our country with pride.”
He also reflected on the recent performance of the under-20 team, which exited the tournament at the group stage, noting that the U18 squad is ready to make a stronger push.
“Although our U20 team didn’t make it past the group stage, we’ve learned from that experience,” Kahawa noted. “This time, we’re more prepared and focused. Tomorrow is our chance to make it count.”
Looking beyond the semifinal, Kahawa spoke of the bigger picture qualifying for the continental U18 African Championship and possibly surpassing the team’s previous achievements.
“Last year, our U19 girls qualified and went on to finish third in Africa,” he said. “This year, we want to go even further. Breaking that record is part of our mission. We just ask Tanzanians to continue praying for the team InshaAllah.”
The semifinal match between Tanzania and Uganda promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both sides vying for a coveted spot in the final and a chance to compete on the continental stage.
