Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Godwin Mollel, has emphasized the need to sustain and enhance disaster and emergency preparedness training efforts.
The initiative is being implemented by the Emergency Department of Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) in partnership with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).
Speaking during the official closing ceremony of the training held on May 17, 2025, Dr. Mollel said the health sector has made remarkable progress in the four years of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership.
“To date, we have received more than 17,000 international patients seeking medical care in Tanzania. This achievement reflects the significant investments President Samia has made in the health sector,” Dr. Mollel noted.
The training brought together 32 participants from various sectors and aimed to enhance national capacity in managing disasters and emergency situations.
Dr. Mollel commended Benjamin Mkapa Hospital for its leadership in strengthening emergency services, noting that government efforts to elevate the hospital’s profile are yielding positive results.
In his remarks, BMH Executive Director Prof. Abel Makubi said the training was geared toward improving the country’s disaster response system.
“This program has equipped our team of specialists with the skills needed to respond effectively when disasters strike. We sincerely thank President Samia for her continued efforts in strengthening our health infrastructure,” said Prof. Makubi.
Representing the Turkish Ministry of Health, Dr. Mustapher Kucuk said the training reflects the strong and growing partnership between Tanzania and Turkey.
“This program is a clear testament to the close cooperation between our two governments in advancing healthcare services,” said Dr. Kucuk.
The training initiative is expected to be further expanded to ensure Tanzania remains well-prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to future emergencies and disasters.
