Tanzania Fertilizer Company (TFC) is set to gain a significant boost from a strategic partnership with the Cuban company LABIOFAM, which aims to introduce cutting edge technology in organic fertilizer production.
The collaboration was formalized on May 4, 2025, with the signing of two agreements between Tanzania’s National Development Corporation (NDC) and LABIOFAM in a ceremony held in Dar es Salaam.
Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Samuel Mshote, CEO of TFC, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in enhancing local fertilizer production.
"This partnership will significantly improve our ability to produce organic fertilizers that are safe for both humans and the environment," he said during the event.
The ceremony also saw the participation of Tanzania’s Ambassador to Cuba, Humphrey Polepole, who spoke about the long standing relationship between the two nations.
"This is a great step forward, as both Tanzania and Cuba are committed to improving the welfare of their citizens through the transfer of knowledge and technology," he noted.
Dr. Nicolaus Shombe, Director General of NDC, stressed the importance of the historical ties between Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, and Cuba’s former leader Fidel Castro.
"This partnership is rooted in the vision of our founding leaders, and it reflects the continued cooperation between our countries," Dr. Shombe stated.
The technology transfer will enable Tanzanians to gain skills in producing fertilizers and biopesticides. "This collaboration offers an opportunity to strengthen our economy by producing fertilizers locally, which will also help in protecting public health," Dr. Shombe added.
LABIOFAM’s Director, Mr. Julio Gonzalez, assured the public that his company is ready to facilitate the transfer of technology and knowledge to Tanzania.
"We are committed to ensuring that Tanzanians acquire the necessary skills to produce these products efficiently," he said.
This partnership promises to bolster Tanzania’s agricultural sector, create jobs, and contribute to environmental sustainability, benefiting both the economy and public health in the long run.
