The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is set to be the guest of honor at the inauguration of the JP Magufuli Bridge (Kigongo - Busisi) on June 19, 2025.
The bridge, stretching 3 kilometers in length, along with its connecting roads spanning 1.66 kilometers, will officially be opened on this date.
This announcement was made by Tanzania's Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, on May 19, 2025, during his inspection of the completed bridge, which will become the longest bridge in East and Central Africa.
“Let’s prepare to warmly welcome our President as she arrives to officially open this monumental bridge on June 19, 2025,” said Prime Minister Majaliwa.
In a statement, the Minister for Works,Abdallah Ulega, emphasized that under the leadership of Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the government has successfully completed the construction of the bridge, which spans over water and has been funded entirely through domestic resources an extraordinary achievement for Tanzania.
He added that over 700 billion Tanzanian shillings have been invested in the construction of the bridge, which connects the towns of Kigongo and Busisi on Lake Victoria, the third-largest freshwater lake in the world.
Minister Ulega also assured residents of Sengerema District that the government will continue to develop vital infrastructure, including the Segerema - Nyehunge (54.5 km) and Kamanga - Sengerema (32 km) roads.
These roads will be paved to enhance accessibility, stimulate the local economy, and further integrate the district into national development.
