The third season of the Lina PG Tour officially teed off today at the TPC Golf Course in Moshi, drawing over 131 golfers from across Tanzania in a vibrant celebration of the sport and the legacy of the late Lina Nkya, a former national women’s golf team player.

This annual tournament was established in memory of Lina Nkya, who was widely admired for her passion and contribution to golf in Tanzania.

The event continues to grow in popularity, attracting both seasoned professionals and emerging young players.

Speaking to the press, tournament coordinator Ayne Magombe revealed that 59 of the registered participants are professional and junior golfers, while 72 are social golfers taking part in the event for leisure and support.

“The tournament kicks off today and will conclude on June 1, 2025. It is organized annually to bring together golf clubs and enthusiasts from all corners of the country,” said Magombe.

It’s a special event spearheaded by the family of Said Nkya to honor Lina’s legacy.

"We urge all golf lovers, especially those in Moshi and nearby regions, to come out, participate, and support the sport. Together, we can nurture talent, enhance skills, and increase income opportunities for our players,” Magombe added.

Magombe added that the Lina PG Tour currently hosts five tournaments annually but expressed optimism that with more stakeholder support, the number could increase.

Fadhil Nkya, a professional golfer from Gymkhana Club in Dar es Salaam, echoed the call for greater community involvement, particularly among the youth.

“This tournament is not just a competition, it’s a platform for learning, improving, and showcasing talent,” he said. “Anyone can play golf. We need to break the myth that golf is only for the wealthy. With Lina Tour, we’re helping players prepare for international competitions.”

Fadhil expressed optimism about the sport’s growth: “In the next five years, I see golf becoming much bigger in Tanzania. If more stakeholders support us, we can achieve great things. This is only our third season, and the progress so far is encouraging.”

Other professional golfers from Gymkhana Club in Dar also confirmed their readiness to compete, expressing confidence in their preparation and aiming for top spots in this year’s tournament.

As the Lina PG Tour gains momentum, it continues to serve as a platform to preserve the legacy of a trailblazing woman golfer and promote the future of the sport across Tanzania.
