Public servants under the Office of the Internal Auditor General have been urged to maintain the highest standards of integrity, commitment, and professionalism in their work, as they play a vital role in ensuring proper use of public funds and supporting national development.
The call was made by Deputy Permanent Secretary responsible for Treasury Services in the Ministry of Finance, Ms. Jenifa Christian Omolo, while officiating the staff meeting of the Internal Auditor General’s Department held at Olasite Garden in Arusha.
Ms. Omolo emphasized that internal auditors are not only responsible for reviewing financial reports but also serve as key advisors on effective governance.
She said their work contributes significantly to promoting efficiency, transparency, and compliance with laws, regulations, and procedures across public institutions.
“The achievements we’re witnessing in managing public resources and ensuring value for money in development projects reflect the hard work and dedication of internal auditors within government institutions. These efforts must be accelerated to support further progress under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan and the Sixth Phase Government,” said Ms. Omolo.
She underscored the need for strong strategies to curb financial leakages, detect risk-prone areas early, and offer practical, timely recommendations that can improve systems and performance.
Ms. Omolo also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the auditors by creating a better working environment, which includes access to training, essential tools, and professional support to help them carry out their duties effectively.
“At a time when the Government continues to emphasize reforms, the fight against corruption, and responsible leadership, your role as internal auditors is more important than ever. You are the ethical gatekeepers, performance monitors, and advisors on internal system improvements,” she noted.
She further called for strategic planning to ensure adequate resources are available for their operations, including regular training to keep up with changes in technology and auditing standards.
Earlier, the Internal Auditor General, Mr. Benjamin Magai, welcomed the guest of honor and explained that the objective of the meeting was to review departmental performance, discuss successes and challenges, and explore practical ways to improve service delivery.
“We’ve made meaningful progress in areas such as overseeing operations in public institutions, promoting risk awareness, conducting technical and performance audits, and carrying out special reviews,” said Mr. Magai.
He added that the department remains committed to building the capacity of its staff to ensure they carry out their responsibilities with competence and professionalism.
The meeting brought together internal audit staff from across the country to exchange ideas, share experiences, and chart a way forward toward strengthening accountability and ensuring more efficient use of public resources.
