Minister of Works, Abdallah Ulega, has called on the Contractors Registration Board (CRB) to take firm action against negligent contractors whose delays in project delivery cause financial losses and adverse effects on both the Government and the public.

Speaking on May 15, 2025, in Dar es Salaam at the official opening of the 2025 Annual Stakeholders Consultative Meeting for the Construction Sector, Minister Ulega emphasized that contractors play a vital role in driving national economic growth and improving community welfare.

This year’s forum is held under the theme: Growth of Local Contractors: Opportunities and Challenges.”he added

"Contractors who fail to fulfill their responsibilities delay essential services to the people and inflict unnecessary costs on the Government and the public," the Minister stressed.

He urged contractors to uphold high standards of professionalism and integrity, commending those local contractors who demonstrate patriotism by completing projects on time and to the required quality.

"Ensure that your work reflects both professionalism and patriotism. Projects must be completed on schedule and to the agreed quality standards so that citizens can benefit from timely, high-quality services and the Government realizes full value for money," said Ulega.

CRB Board Vice Chairperson, Engineer Farida Mawenya, also addressed the gathering, urging contractors to steer clear of corrupt practices and to embrace fair competition to strengthen the construction sector and the broader national economy.

She expressed gratitude to the Government for continuing to empower local contractors through the enabling provisions in the Public Procurement Act of 2023 and its 2024 regulations.

These reforms aim to enhance the capacity of local contractors, enabling them to participate in large-scale infrastructure projects and compete regionally and internationally.

Presenting the Board’s performance report, CRB Registrar Engineer Rhoben Nkori stated that in 2024, a total of 1,812 contractors were registered, bringing the number of active registered contractors to 13,596.

He further reported that the Board registered 4,691 projects with a combined value of TZS 10.472 trillion. During the same period, 3,581 projects were inspected, with 2,092 (58.4%) found compliant, while 1,489 projects (41.6%) had various deficiencies, prompting appropriate legal directives.

The Stakeholders Consultative Meeting serves as a vital platform for collaboration among key players in the construction sector, including Government institutions, private sector actors, employers, contractors, consultants, and other professionals.

The forum provides an opportunity to share insights, evaluate progress, address challenges, and develop strategies to enhance efficiency and performance in the sector.
