The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on local and village leaders, along with the general public in 16 regions where the voter registration update is underway, to work closely with registration officials by identifying and reporting individuals who no longer qualify to appear in the Permanent Voter Register.
Speaking during a visit to Mafia District, INEC Chairperson Justice Jacobs Mwambegele, who serves as a Judge of the Court of Appeal, observed local leaders at various registration centres actively participating in the removal of ineligible voters as part of the second phase of the voter register update.
After inspecting several update centres, Justice Mwambegele commended the local government leaders in Mafia District, Pwani Region, for their strong involvement in verifying the preliminary voter register and ensuring that individuals who have lost eligibility are reported and removed accordingly.
“Mafia’s leaders have shown great commitment by presenting lists of individuals who no longer qualify to remain in the voter register,” he said.
“I urge leaders in all 16 regions across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar to follow this example. Whenever someone is found to have lost eligibility, please come forward and request their removal.”he added
Justice Mwambegele also noted that the voter register update in all 16 regions has gotten off to a smooth start, with centres opening on time.
He encouraged citizens who missed earlier opportunities to register to do so now and secure their right to vote in the general election scheduled for October this year.
Mohamed Hussein Othman, the Registration Officer for Mafia Constituency, confirmed the successful launch of the exercise at all 15 centres in the district.
He said residents who had previously missed the chance to register or update their voter details are now turning out in large numbers.
“The update of the Permanent Voter Register is going well,” Othman said. “All 15 centres opened promptly at 8:00 a.m., and citizens are showing up to correct their information. Those who missed the first phase are now ensuring their names are properly included.”he added
Omar Mngwali, Chairperson of Vunja Nazi sub-village in Kilindoni Ward, said his long-standing service and community involvement enabled him to identify 11 residents who no longer meet the eligibility criteria. He reported their names to be removed from the register.
The second phase of the voter registration update began on May 16 and will run through May 22, 2025. The exercise covers the regions of Arusha, Manyara, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, Morogoro, Pwani, Singida, Dodoma, Dar es Salaam, Lindi, Mtwara, Mjini Magharibi, North Unguja, South Unguja, North Pemba, and South Pemba.
Alongside the registration update, the preliminary voter register is being publicly displayed, allowing citizens to verify their details, make corrections, and file objections against any voters who no longer meet eligibility requirements.
The preliminary register is posted at all centres used during the first phase of the update.Registration centres are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. throughout the seven-day exercise.
