Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has called on Tanzanians to honor the legacy of the late Cleopa David Msuya by continuing his vision of national unity and development.

President Mwinyi joined other top national leaders in a state farewell held at Karimjee Grounds in Dar es Salaam for the former First Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania and retired Prime Minister, who passed away on May 7, 2025, at the age of 94.

In his remarks, President Mwinyi described the late Msuya as “a wise and patriotic leader who served the nation with unwavering commitment and integrity.”

"Cleopa Msuya was not only a statesman, but a true believer in the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. We have lost a strong and dependable leader who put the nation's interests above all else," said President Mwinyi.

He further noted that Msuya's leadership was especially crucial during difficult economic periods and global transitions.

“At a time when Tanzania was navigating complex global economic changes, Msuya stood firm and contributed significantly to strengthening our economic diplomacy. He always put Tanzania first,” Dr. Mwinyi stated.

Calling on citizens to reflect on Msuya's legacy, President Mwinyi urged Tanzanians to emulate the late leader’s dedication to service.

"We must honor him by continuing his vision working hard, staying united, and prioritizing the progress of our nation. That is how we keep his spirit alive," he added.

The farewell ceremony was led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan and attended by senior government officials, religious leaders, and members of the public. The late Msuya is expected to be laid to rest next Tuesday in his home village of Usangi, Mwanga District, in Kilimanjaro Region.

Cleopa David Msuya served Tanzania in various high-level roles over decades, including as Minister of Finance and twice as Prime Minister. His legacy is remembered as one of stability, unity, and visionary leadership.
