Water supply to be temporarily cut in Dar es Salaam on sunday

By The Respondent Reporter

Thousands of residents from Bagamoyo to Ilala are expected to experience a temporary water supply disruption on Sunday, April 13, 2025, as the Dar es Salaam Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) carries out vital improvements to its electrical infrastructure at the Ruvu Chini Water Treatment Plant.

In a public notice issued on April 12, DAWASA announced that water services will be cut off for an average of seven hours, starting from 12:00 midnight to 7:00 a.m.

The temporary halt is due to scheduled electrical system upgrades aimed at improving efficiency and reliability in water production and distribution.

“This planned maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the performance and stability of our water systems,” reads part of DAWASA’s statement. “We ask residents for their understanding and cooperation as we work to provide better service in the long run.”

The outage will affect a wide stretch of areas across Dar es Salaam and its outskirts. These include Bagamoyo, Mapinga, Mabwepande, Bunju, Tegeta, Mbezi, Boko, Kunduchi, Salasala, Goba, Madale, Mbopo, Mivumoni, Kawe, Lugalo, and Makongo, as well as urban neighborhoods such as the University of Dar es Salaam, Mwenge, Kijitonyama, Mikocheni, Msasani, Oysterbay, Masaki, Mwananyamala, Kinondoni, Magomeni, and Kigogo.

Other areas expected to experience the interruption include Chang’ombe, Keko, Kurasini, Kigamboni, Airport, Kiwalani, Buguruni, Vingunguti, Ilala, and parts of the central business district.

DAWASA is urging residents in these locations to store enough water in advance to cover their essential needs throughout the outage period.

“We advise all customers to prepare accordingly and ensure they have a sufficient water supply to last through the temporary disruption,” the statement said.

To reduce the impact, DAWASA says it has made arrangements to ensure water reserves are available to meet critical needs.

Emergency support systems have also been placed on standby, especially in health and public service institutions.

While the inconvenience is expected to be brief, DAWASA has expressed regret over the disruption and assured customers of a swift restoration of services once the upgrades are completed.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank the public for their patience,” said the utility provider, encouraging anyone with questions or concerns to reach out via its toll-free customer service line at 0800 110 064, or through WhatsApp at 0735 202 121.

The Ruvu Chini facility is one of the largest and most critical water sources serving Dar es Salaam and surrounding regions.

As the city continues to expand rapidly, DAWASA has prioritized infrastructure improvements to keep up with rising demand.

The ongoing investment in system upgrades is part of a broader strategy to enhance water security, reduce service interruptions, and build long-term resilience in the face of urbanization and climate challenges.

With this latest notice, DAWASA underscores its commitment to providing safe, reliable, and sustainable water services for all its customers today and in the years to come.
