The Union Volleyball Championship is off to a thrilling start as teams showcased their strength and determination in a series of intense matches held yesterday at the University of Dar es Salaam grounds.
In the men’s category, Mafunzo faced a tough opening match, suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of JKT. Similarly, Moro Warriors couldn’t withstand the pressure, also losing 3-0 to the dominant JKT squad.
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) delivered a solid performance, securing a 3-1 victory against JKU of Zanzibar. Jeshi Stars also impressed, sweeping Grace Warriors 3-0, while High Voltage edged out Nyuki in a closely contested 3-2 match.
In the women’s division, Jeshi Stars continued their winning form with a commanding 3-0 win over Orkeeswa. Mafunzo mirrored that success, overpowering Star Girls with a 3-0 scoreline. JKT maintained their dominance with another clean sweep, defeating JKU 3-0, while Korosho Queens triumphed over Chui with the same result.
Speaking to The Respondent Online, JKT Head Coach Hamis Papaa Hamis expressed confidence in his team’s preparation as they look to defend the title they clinched last year in Zanzibar.
“These are highly competitive games, and every team has come prepared to fight for results,” he said. “But we’re continuing right where we left off. Tactically, we’re in a good place, and we know our opponents well.”
Meanwhile, Shukuru Ally, Deputy Secretary General of the Tanzania Volleyball Federation (TVF), praised the strong turnout and level of competition, despite the overlap with May Day sporting events.
“This year’s championship has attracted 19 teams—10 men’s and 9 women’s—from both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar,” he said. “The standard of play has risen significantly. Every team is determined to perform well, and the competition is fierce.”
He confirmed that the top three teams will be awarded trophies and medals, with additional individual awards recognizing standout players in the tournament.
