Tanzania ushers in era of legal transparency with Swahili translation and digital access drive

Dodoma, Tanzania – April 23, 2025 – In a decisive move to democratize access to justice, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has mandated the comprehensive translation of Tanzania's legal framework into Swahili, coupled with a robust digital dissemination strategy.

Speaking at the launch of the 2023 Revised Edition of Tanzanian Laws at Chamwino State House, President Hassan articulated a vision where legal knowledge is not confined to a privileged few, but readily accessible to all Tanzanian citizens.

"Our laws are the bedrock of our society, the very reflection of our civilization," President Hassan declared. "Yet, for too long, they have remained obscured for many, locked behind linguistic barriers. This initiative is about tearing down those walls, ensuring that every Tanzanian, regardless of their background, can understand and exercise their rights."

The ambitious project involves the translation of 446 revised laws into Swahili, the national language, effectively bridging the communication gap that has historically marginalized a significant portion of the population. This move is seen as a pivotal step towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable legal environment.

"The President's directive is a testament to the government's unwavering commitment to the rule of law," notes a press statement signed by Sharifa B. Nyanga, Director of Presidential Communications.

"By making legal information accessible in Swahili, we are empowering citizens to actively participate in the legal process, ensuring that justice is not only served, but also understood," the President said.

Beyond translation, the government is prioritizing the digitization of legal documents, aiming to establish a user-friendly online platform.

This digital infrastructure will provide citizens with instant access to legal information, streamlining legal processes and fostering a culture of legal awareness. The digital access is also intended to help reduce corruption, by making the legal processes more transparent.

The decision to revise laws every ten years, instead of the previous 20, and to implement yearly digital updates of smaller revisions, reflects a commitment to maintaining a dynamic and responsive legal system.

This proactive approach underscores the government's dedication to ensuring that Tanzania's legal framework remains relevant and effective in addressing the evolving needs of its citizens.

With these sweeping reforms, Tanzania is poised to embark on a new chapter of legal transparency and accessibility, where justice is not only a principle but a tangible reality for all.
