The European Union (EU) has commended Tanzania for its bold and transformative reforms in the mining sector, recognizing the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan in fostering investment and driving economic growth.

The praise was delivered during a strategic meeting held in Dodoma between the Minister of Minerals,  Anthony Mavunde, and a delegation from the EU led by Ms. Isabelle Mignucci, Head of the EU Political Section.

Ms. Mignucci applauded the Tanzanian government for the progress made in strengthening the mining industry, noting its growing contribution to the national economy.

She emphasized that under President Samia’s leadership, the sector has become more attractive to investors and strategically aligned with global development goals.

As part of its support, the EU has committed €60 million to boost key areas of the industry. The funds will be channeled into the construction of infrastructure such as roads in mining zones, the provision of reliable electricity, technical skills development for Tanzanians, and advanced geological research to unlock the country’s mineral potential.

Minister Mavunde welcomed the EU’s continued support, stressing the importance of deepening collaboration—especially in the area of mineral value addition.

He pointed out that while mineral exploration remains vital, Tanzania's current priority is to ensure minerals are processed within the country to maximize economic returns and generate employment.

“Our top priority now is to see value added to our minerals locally, so we can benefit more as a nation. Therefore, our cooperation must also focus on attracting investments in value addition industries,” said Mavunde.

The meeting was also attended by the Chief Executive Officer of the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), Dr. Musa Budeba, and Assistant Commissioner for Minerals, Engineer Terence Ngole.

The discussions reflected a shared commitment to building a modern, inclusive, and resilient mining sector that contributes significantly to Tanzania’s socio-economic transformation.
