The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), through its Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) Meteorological Center, has marked World Meteorological Day by educating students and discussing ways to improve weather services for safer air travel.

Speaking today, March 23, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Mr. John Mayunga, TMA’s Manager for Aviation Meteorological Services and Supervisor at JNIA, said it is important for people to understand weather patterns so they can take precautions and stay safe.

“Weather warnings help people prepare and avoid disasters. Many major disasters around the world are caused by extreme weather,” said Mr. Mayunga.

He added that TMA has upgraded its systems to provide weather updates faster and more accurately. “We now use modern technology that works automatically, helping us deliver timely information,” he said.

Mr. Ally Selemani, Supervisor of the TMA Observation Center at JNIA, said new technology has greatly improved their work, making weather reports more accurate and reducing challenges.

“As technology advances, we continue to upgrade our equipment to collect better data. We have made big improvements compared to past years,” said Mr. Selemani.

Students Ivan Yona and Jackline Raphael from Michael Mausa Primary School thanked TMA for teaching them about weather services, saying they now understand how weather reports work and how to respond to different conditions.
