Tanzania has officially endorsed Prof. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, as its candidate for the position of Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa.
In a press conference, the Minister of Health, Jenista Mhagama (MP), expressed confidence in Prof. Janabi’s qualifications and leadership abilities, stating that his extensive experience makes him the perfect candidate to bring positive changes to the healthcare sector across Africa.
“Prof. Janabi is a visionary leader with the ability to reform and enhance healthcare systems. His proven track record in transforming healthcare services in Tanzania demonstrates his capacity to lead at the regional level,” said Minister Mhagama.
Prof. Janabi’s leadership role at Muhimbili National Hospital was also highlighted as a major achievement.
Under his guidance, the hospital has undergone significant improvements in healthcare delivery, including strengthening referral systems and expanding services across various levels of care.
Minister Mhagama emphasized, “Prof. Janabi has been a key driver in the transformation of Muhimbili into a center of excellence for healthcare services.”
Another milestone in Prof. Janabi’s career was his founding and leadership of the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI), where he led substantial reforms in heart disease treatment in Tanzania and beyond.
These efforts have dramatically reduced the number of patients seeking treatment abroad, improving access to cardiac care in Africa. “Prof. Janabi’s work at JKCI has led to a 95% reduction in patient referrals overseas, which is a testament to his dedication to improving healthcare within the region,” the Minister noted.
With a strong belief in Prof. Janabi’s potential, Minister Mhagama concluded, “Tanzania is confident that he will bring about transformative changes in Africa’s health sector. His leadership and experience will enhance the continent’s ability to deliver quality healthcare to all its citizens.”
The Minister also called for national and regional support in backing Prof. Janabi’s candidacy. "We encourage all Tanzanians and healthcare stakeholders to unite and support Prof. Janabi, as his victory would benefit Africa’s health systems and ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare."
