Nzega Town is gearing up for a major infrastructure facelift, with plans underway to construct 10.6 kilometers of tarmac roads and a modern central market. The ambitious projects aim to improve mobility, enhance safety, and boost the town’s economic prospects.
Acting Nzega Town Director, Mr. Ajalii Malimwengu, confirmed that the initiatives, championed by Nzega Town MP Hussein Bashe, have secured funding through the World Bank-backed Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTC) project.
“Today, we are reviewing the consultant’s findings before moving to the next phase,” Mr. Malimwengu said during a meeting with the World Bank Mission Implementation Support team on Wednesday.
The roads set for construction include Ferouz Road, Swahili–Kachoma, Kalangale One and Two, and Dr. Massam–Chief Ntinginya roads. These will be built to asphalt concrete standards, complete with sidewalks and streetlights to improve accessibility and safety.
However, the project is not without challenges. Engineer Rujinya, Managing Director of GaugePro Consult Limited, highlighted obstacles such as water pipes, electric poles, and trees within the construction zones.
Solutions and cost implications are being assessed to mitigate these issues. Alongside road improvements, Nzega’s traders will benefit from a state-of-the-art central market designed to accommodate 350 vendors across six business categories. The new facility is expected to stimulate commerce and increase traders’ earnings.
Dr. Alphonce Tiba, a World Bank consultant, stressed the need for inclusive planning. “Engage all key stakeholders and integrate their feedback. The new market will impact many traders, so understanding their needs is crucial,” he said.
To guarantee durability, the World Bank’s Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist, Engineer Kondwanie Chirembo, urged a thorough soil investigation to prevent structural weaknesses. He also called for a well-detailed project report outlining road connectivity and functionality.
As Nzega prepares to break ground, these projects mark a significant step toward transforming the town’s infrastructure, boosting local trade, and improving residents’ livelihoods.
