The Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) has commended the government for constructing 109 houses for victims of the devastating mudslides that struck Manyara Region in December 2023.
During a visit to Waret Hamlet in Hanang District on March 17, 2025, the committee inspected the progress of key development projects, including the resettlement housing and the construction of a new primary school in the area.
Speaking after the site visit, PAC Chairperson and Member of Parliament for Vwawa, Japhet Hasunga, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the projects and the prudent use of public funds.
"We extend our appreciation to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership in addressing this crisis, as well as to all officials who have overseen this project. We have witnessed public resources being utilized effectively, which reflects strong governance in project implementation. It is our duty to ensure these initiatives are protected and maintained to uphold their quality and sustainability," said Hasunga.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Policy, Parliament, and Coordination, Dr. Jim Yonazi, emphasized that the housing project is part of the government’s broader efforts to restore normalcy for those affected by the disaster.
Beyond the housing initiative, the government has also completed the construction of a modern primary school in the area at a cost exceeding TZS 490 million.
The school, now serving more than 600 students, features well-equipped classrooms, teachers' offices, and sanitation facilities.
"The houses have been built in Waret, Gidagamond Village, Mogitu Ward, Hanang District. The land where they stand was previously owned by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the Prison Service but has since been transferred to the Hanang District Council," Dr. Yonazi explained.
He further detailed that the houses were constructed on 109 plots, each measuring 800 square meters, out of a total of 226 plots in Block A.
Each house has a floor area of 29 square meters, comprising three bedrooms, a living room, a veranda, an external kitchen, a bathroom, and an outdoor toilet.
The construction was closely supervised by experts from the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, and Coordination), the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), the Ministry of Finance, the Manyara Regional Secretariat, and the Hanang District Council.
In a significant step toward disaster preparedness, Dr. Yonazi announced that the government is installing specialized monitoring equipment on Mount Hanang to provide early warnings in case of potential landslides or flooding.
"We have learned important lessons from this disaster, and we are now implementing scientific measures to mitigate future risks and protect lives," he stated.
The PAC’s visit has reinforced hope among Hanang residents, who are witnessing the government’s commitment to their well-being.
Officials have reiterated their dedication to ensuring that development projects are executed transparently and effectively, ultimately benefiting the communities they are designed to serve.
