Jerry Silaa, the Member of Parliament for Ukonga, has promised to work with the Dar Es Salaam Volleyball Association to help make the ongoing regional volleyball league a success. The league is taking place at Kampala International University of Tanzania (KIUT) in Dar es Salaam.
Silaa’s representative, Juma Muzungu, who is also the Chairman of the Youth Wing of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party in Ilala District, made this promise during the league's opening yesterday at the KIUT stadium.
Since the league is happening in his constituency, Silaa said he would support it until the league ends on June 28 this year.
"I would like to congratulate our hosts at Kampala for providing the venue for this league for nearly three years. This is part of supporting the efforts of our President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan," Muzungu said.
He also encouraged the players and fans to register for the voter registration exercise, which will officially begin tomorrow in various parts of Dar es Salaam.
By registering and confirming their names, they will be able to vote in the General Election scheduled for October this year.
Yusuph Mkalambati, the Secretary-General of DAREVA, shared that 29 teams are taking part in the league, including both men's and women's teams in Series A and B.
In Series A, there are 13 teams: seven men's teams and six women's teams. In Series B, there are 16 teams: 10 men's teams and six women's teams.
"Our league started on March 15, and the champions of both Series A and B, for both men and women, will be announced on June 28," Mkalambati said.
In the men's games, JKT won 3-2 against Bandari, while the hosts lost 3-0 to Jeshi Stars. Best Six won 3-1 against Giraffe.By Victoria Godfrey
