The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has assured Tanzanians living abroad that they can easily open bank accounts in Tanzania.
This comes after false information spread on social media, claiming that the Diaspora cannot open accounts or that they must follow card regulations meant for people living in Tanzania.
BoT reviewed the banking process and confirmed that it is simple and accessible for Tanzanians abroad. Many banks in the country have taken steps to serve the Diaspora better.
Some have opened special service desks to help them quickly, while others have introduced special banking packages designed for Tanzanians living overseas.
To open a bank account in Tanzania while living abroad, a person only needs to provide either a National ID (NIDA) or a valid passport.
These documents can be submitted physically at a bank branch or sent online via email or the bank’s digital platform.
Once the account is open, the customer can collect their bank card in person when visiting Tanzania or request the bank to send it to them abroad. This flexibility allows customers to manage their banking needs easily, no matter where they are.
BoT also encouraged Tanzanians abroad to keep using local banks, as this helps them stay connected to the country’s financial system and contribute to Tanzania’s economy.
Many people in the Diaspora send money back home to support families and invest in businesses, making reliable banking services very important.
To make things even easier, banks are advised to educate their customers about the banking process and requirements.
The Tanzanian government is working to encourage the Diaspora to invest in the country’s economy. In support of this, BoT promised to ensure smooth banking services for Tanzanians abroad.
The central bank will continue to check on banks and solve any issues that might make it difficult for the Diaspora to access financial services.
BoT released this statement to correct misleading social media reports that claimed Tanzanians abroad struggle to open bank accounts due to tough rules.
The bank emphasized that these claims are not true. It also advised customers to get correct information directly from banks instead of relying on rumors.
Banks were also encouraged to improve communication with their customers to prevent misunderstandings.
Tanzanians abroad play an important role in the country’s development by sending money home, starting businesses, and investing in different sectors.
With the government encouraging the Diaspora to invest in Tanzania, it is important that banking services remain simple and accessible.
Keeping a strong connection with local banks allows the Diaspora to safely and easily handle their financial matters.
By clearing up these misunderstandings, BoT is working to build trust between Tanzanians abroad and the country’s banks.
With continued improvements in banking services, the Diaspora can access financial support without difficulties.
BoT reassured the Diaspora that it is committed to making banking easier and solving any challenges they may face.
