The Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, announced on February 11, 2025, that the government, through the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) and the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), has introduced new guidelines for electricity connection costs.
These costs will differ depending on the location, with areas identified as towns and urban villages being charged 320,960 Tanzanian shillings for connection.
In contrast, rural areas will pay a reduced cost of 27,000 shillings for the same service.
Kapinga further explained that the implementation of electricity projects depends on the availability of funds for various groups.
She emphasized that the 27,000 shilling fee for rural areas is part of government-subsidized projects designed to make electricity more accessible and affordable for citizens.
Additionally, she mentioned that there are special "Peri-urban" projects for residents in urban and peri-urban areas, which also charge 27,000 shillings for connection, but residents must connect during the ongoing implementation of these projects.
