Dr. Steven Kiruswa, the Deputy Minister for Minerals, has called on the officials and employees of the Ministry of Minerals and its related institutions to work harder and more efficiently to ensure that the Mining Sector contributes 10% to the national GDP by 2025.
Speaking at a Mining Bonanza on February 8, 2025, at John Merlin Secondary School grounds in Dodoma, Dr. Kiruswa emphasized the importance of increasing efforts to meet and exceed this crucial target for the country’s development.
He highlighted that teamwork, responsibility, and unity are essential in achieving this goal. He explained that the National Development Plan for 2025 and the 2020 Election Manifesto of the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party have set the target of the Mining Sector contributing 10% to the national GDP by 2025, and the Ministry is close to reaching this target.
He stressed that it is the responsibility of every official to work professionally and diligently to make it happen.
Dr. Kiruswa also pointed out that the Mining Sector plays a key role in the national economy, creating jobs, generating government revenue, and supporting community development through projects like corporate social responsibility (CSR).
He encouraged employees of the Ministry to set an example by acting with honesty, responsibility, and respect for work procedures, while working enthusiastically and creatively to improve the sector.
He urged the Ministry’s staff to be role models for good service, discipline, and productivity for the benefit of the nation.
Engineer Yahya Samamba, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals, reminded employees of the Ministry and its institutions of their duty to protect government secrets and ensure that sensitive information is safeguarded according to established procedures.
He emphasized that protecting such information is crucial, especially in a sensitive sector like mining, and any failure in this regard could harm the sector’s development and have serious consequences for the country.
Engineer Samamba also encouraged employees to work with love, unity, and respect for each other, both inside and outside the office.
He emphasized that teamwork is essential for success and urged everyone to treat each other with respect, collaborate, and support one another in their daily tasks, as unity will help achieve the Ministry’s goals.
During the event, the Ministry’s staff took the opportunity to say goodbye to the former Chairman of the Mineral Commission, Professor Idris Kikula, and retired Commissioner Professor Abdukarim Mruma.
The current Chairman of the Mineral Commission, Ms. Janet Lekashingo, praised the two leaders for their significant contributions to improving the mining sector and helping it grow and contribute to the country’s economy.
She described their work as an example of excellent service that others should follow. The event was attended by various leaders from the Ministry of Minerals and its related institutions, including the Mineral Commission, the National Mining Corporation (STAMICO), the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), and the Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TEITI).
The purpose of the event was to foster unity among staff and inspire them to work hard towards achieving the sector’s goals.
