The Minister of Works, Abdallah Ulega, has announced that the government, through the Ministry of Works, is taking urgent steps to reduce traffic congestion on the main road connecting Mwanza City to Usagara by upgrading it to a four-lane highway.
Speaking to residents in Buhongwa, Mwanza Region, Minister Ulega stated that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has instructed him to expedite the process of securing a contractor for the project.
The proposed plan involves constructing two lanes from Mwanza City to Usagara and another two lanes in the opposite direction.
"We plan to finalize the contractor procurement process by mid-February this year. Once a contractor is selected, we will officially hand over the project site here in Buhongwa to enable construction of the 25-kilometer road to commence without delay," Ulega explained.
The minister also highlighted that the highway will feature a median strip reserved for future development.
Additionally, the road will be equipped with an extensive network of streetlights to improve safety, especially given the vibrant economic activities that occur both day and night in the area.
Minister Ulega further directed that the road reserves currently occupied by small-scale traders be developed innovatively.
He urged district leaders to collaborate with investors to upgrade these spaces in cost-effective ways.
"President Samia has been proactive in implementing initiatives that empower citizens to conduct business more effectively.
It is our responsibility to create a supportive economic environment for all Tanzanians to thrive," he emphasized.
The expansion of the road, the installation of streetlights, and the introduction of safety measures will not only alleviate traffic congestion and reduce accidents but will also boost the local economy and enhance the quality of life for residents in the region.
