Iramba – Residents of Mpazu Hamlet have expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the government for spearheading an ambitious energy study through the Rural Energy Agency (REA) in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The study launched to assess energy availability and usage across the district, has been lauded as a significant step toward addressing energy-related challenges and developing robust strategies for sustainable energy solutions.
“This research shows the government is genuinely committed to solving our problems,” said resident Gabriel Ndabo, emphasizing that the study holds the promise of tangible benefits for their community. Ndabo pointed out the alarming rate of deforestation for firewood and stressed the importance of crafting policies to protect forests.
For residents like Juliana Mtuwa, who rely solely on firewood for cooking, the research signifies a brighter future. “This study is a lifeline for us. We face many challenges, including health risks from firewood and the lack of electricity for our children to study. This initiative is an important step toward much-needed development,” said Mtuwa.
The research, aimed at gaining insights into energy access and utilization across Tanzania’s mainland, began in December 2024 and is set to wrap up in January 2025. The collected data will undergo analysis, with findings expected in March 2025.
NBS interviewer Gloria Nkungu, who has participated in three energy-related studies, noted the significant progress in community awareness and cooperation during this exercise. “The engagement from residents has been encouraging, and we’ve observed positive changes in some areas,” said Nkungu.
This government-led initiative aims to uncover the current state of energy use, laying the groundwork for solutions that improve lives and enhance Tanzania’s energy sector. Residents remain optimistic that the study’s results will translate into impactful projects, including forest conservation measures and expanded electricity access.
The government’s commitment to addressing rural energy needs underscores its vision for sustainable development and equitable energy distribution. With the support and hope of citizens, the study marks a milestone in paving the way for transformative changes in energy access across the region.
