AfDB President arrives in Tanzania for energy summit

The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has arrived in Tanzania to participate in the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit, which will take place from January 27–28, 2025, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam.

Dr. Adesina was warmly received at the Julius Nyerere International Airport by Tanzania’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr. Albert Chalamila, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mr. Cosato Chumi, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation.

The summit aims to bring together African Heads of State and key energy sector stakeholders to discuss strategies for ensuring reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy access across the continent, a critical step toward driving Africa’s development.

The high-profile event is expected to attract 25 Heads of State, along with 10 Vice Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Deputy Prime Ministers, making a total of 35 top-level leaders.

Leaders from Algeria, Comoros, Liberia, Lesotho, Botswana, Kenya, Ghana, Gabon, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Sudan, Malawi, Zambia, Somalia, Guinea-Bissau, Burundi, Mauritania, Congo-Brazzaville, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Libya, Nigeria, Djibouti, and Gabon have confirmed their attendance.

Additionally, Vice Presidents from Gambia and Benin, Prime Ministers from Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Equatorial Guinea, as well as Deputy Prime Ministers from Eswatini and Namibia, are also set to participate in the summit.
