Teams from Zanzibar and Temeke emerged as champions in the recently concluded National Baseball and Softball Championships held at Azania Secondary School Grounds in Dar es Salaam.
The tournament showcased outstanding talent and fierce competition among teams from various regions.
Zanzibar claimed the championship title in softball, securing first place ahead of Dodoma, which finished as runners-up.
In the baseball category, Temeke triumphed in a thrilling final against Dodoma, taking home the championship trophy.
Speaking after the victory, Temeke’s captain, Alpha Gabriel, attributed their success to rigorous preparation and unwavering commitment throughout the tournament.
"Our win was a result of strategic planning and determination. The competition was intense, as all participating regions came well-prepared. However, we were fortunate to emerge victorious," Gabriel remarked.
The Acting Secretary of the Tanzania Baseball and Softball Association, Abubakary Nachiwa, praised the level of competition and the achievements of the event, particularly in promoting youth participation.
“These championships not only highlighted the exceptional talent we have but also opened doors for players to gain international exposure.
Our Japanese partners were present to scout players for an upcoming youth tournament in Japan, which includes both competitive games and exhibition matches,” Nachiwa explained.
He also emphasized the importance of supporting young female athletes and called on parents to encourage their daughters to take advantage of opportunities in sports.
"I urge parents to provide their daughters with greater opportunities to participate in sports and other activities that nurture their talents,” Nachiwa added.
The tournament's success underscores the growing popularity of baseball and softball in Tanzania, as well as the potential for local players to shine on the global stage.
