The Environmental Conservation Community of Tanzania (ECCT) and Msimamo Youth Educators have called on Tanzanians to work closely with the government in safeguarding the environment, emphasizing that collective action is crucial for a sustainable future.
This appeal was made by ECCT Director, Ms. Lucky Michael, during the grand finale of the Mazingira Youth Cup, a week-long environmental awareness football tournament held in Mnyamani Ward, Ilala Municipality.
Ms. Michael underscored the role of individual responsibility in environmental conservation, urging citizens to take initiative in keeping their surroundings clean.
“To build a nation with a healthier environment, it is vital for every citizen to take responsibility. If you see any litter in your area or elsewhere, pick it up and dispose of it in the proper place. We should not wait for directives from our leaders or the government; instead, we must actively collaborate with them to create clean and safe surroundings,” she stated.
Msimamo Chairperson, Mr. Omari Mandari, highlighted the dual purpose of the Mazingira Youth Cup: to educate the community about environmental conservation and to promote physical fitness among participants.
“The overwhelming support from local residents has inspired us to plan future tournaments targeting younger participants. Our goal is to instill environmental awareness in the youth and ensure this knowledge is passed on to future generations,” he remarked.
Mnyamani Ward Chairperson, who attended the event, praised the two organizations for their innovative approach to environmental education.
He urged residents to utilize the knowledge they gained during the event to make meaningful changes in their community.
The tournament concluded with Dillema Football Team clinching the title in the men’s category, while UVCCM Mnyamani’s Rede Team emerged victorious in the women’s division.
The winners received trophies, cash prizes, and jerseys in recognition of their achievements.
This initiative highlights the power of youth-driven campaigns and sports as tools for raising awareness and mobilizing communities to address environmental challenges.
