The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has called on journalists and media outlets to adhere to legal frameworks, election procedures, and ethical standards in their reporting as the nation approaches the 2025 general elections.

The reminder aims to ensure the safety and security of citizens and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

The call was made by Engineer Kadaya Baluhye, TCRA’s Manager for the Communication Service Users’ Division, during a one-day training session for journalists from various media outlets in the Kagera region.

The workshop, held in Bukoba on December 17, 2024, emphasized the importance of unbiased and professional journalism during this critical period.

Engineer Baluhye highlighted the vital role of journalists in informing the public and cautioned against being influenced by external forces.

“The upcoming elections involve the selection of councilors, parliamentarians, and the President in a multi-party system. Journalists must remain impartial and adhere to election laws and regulations,” said Baluhye. “Some people may try to use the media to serve their interests, but journalists must stand by their professionalism and avoid being swayed by these pressures.”

Baluhye also urged journalists to familiarize themselves with election laws and ensure their reports are well-informed and factually accurate.

Imelda Salum, TCRA’s Lake Zone Manager, reinforced the message, urging media professionals to use authentic sources when covering stories to avoid unnecessary conflicts or misinformation. Salum also advised radio and television station managers to resist undue influence from station owners and prioritize impartial reporting.

“It is essential for media managers to focus on serving the public interest and not succumb to directives that might compromise professionalism,” Salum said.

Addressing technical issues in broadcasting, Salum encouraged radio stations experiencing poor signal coverage or dead spots to install booster devices to ensure full coverage in their licensed areas.

Meanwhile, Aule Kileo, TCRA’s Licensing and Enforcement Officer, assured attendees of the authority’s continued support. “We will keep working closely with stakeholders and journalists to address challenges in service delivery. Together, we can ensure a positive impact on society,” Kileo stated.
