The Chief Government Spokesperson Dr. Gerson Msigwa (pictured), has recently delivered an update on major government projects, detailing how taxpayer money is being utilized to drive development.
He highlighted progress on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), emphasizing President Samia Suluhu Hassan's commitment to ensuring seamless trade connections between Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and other regions.
Msigwa reported that the SGR segments from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and its extension to Dodoma (Makutupora) have been completed and are now fully operational.
These advancements mark a significant step in modernizing Tanzania's transport infrastructure, paving the way for improved regional trade and economic growth.
Security remains a top priority, with Msigwa noting that the government has intensified efforts to protect the infrastructure.
Through the collaboration of police, security officers, and SGR staff, several criminals involved in theft and damage to the railway have been apprehended.
To strengthen security measures, CCTV cameras have been installed, with plans for additional installations. Msigwa also mentioned the potential use of satellite surveillance to ensure the safety and longevity of the railway for the benefit of all Tanzanians.
Construction on other SGR sections is progressing steadily, with contractors actively working on the Uvinza route, as well as the Mwanza-Kigoma, Tabora-Isaka, and Dodoma-Mwanza segments.
These updates dismiss rumors suggesting that construction had stalled, providing clarity and reassurance to stakeholders and citizens.
Msigwa announced plans to organize field visits for journalists to witness the progress firsthand, underscoring the government's transparency and dedication to completing the projects.
The impact of the SGR is already evident, with over 1.1 million passengers transported in just four months, a stark contrast to the 400,000 passengers recorded over an entire year on the older MGR service, according to TRC reports.
This milestone showcases the transformative potential of the SGR in revolutionizing Tanzania's transportation sector while boosting economic activity across the region.
