Tanzania hosts Regional Energy Efficiency Conference to promote green technologies

By Alfred Zacharia

The Regional Energy Efficiency Conference (REEC) has kicked off successfully in Arusha, attracting leaders and stakeholders from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The conference aims to advance the adoption of sustainable energy solutions and foster regional collaboration on energy efficiency.

On the first day, participants showcased cutting-edge technologies designed to reduce energy consumption and promote environmental sustainability.

Exhibits included energy-efficient electric stoves, solar-powered water-pumping machines, and electric vehicles, all of which highlight innovative approaches to addressing energy challenges in the region.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Dr. James Mataragio, toured the exhibition booths, commending participants for their contributions.

He also assessed ongoing preparations for the official opening of the conference, scheduled for tomorrow, where the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr. Doto Biteko, will preside.

Dr. Mataragio underscored Tanzania’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and adopting green energy solutions.

“This conference is a testament to our dedication to sustainable development. I’ve seen electric stoves that use minimal electricity, capable of cooking beans at a cost of just TZS 300, compared to the TZS 3,000 to 4,000 required when using charcoal,” he remarked.

Lamine Diallo, Head of the Natural Resources Section at the European Union (EU), emphasized the importance of the conference in promoting energy conservation across East and Southern Africa.

He expressed the EU’s pride in partnering with the Government of Tanzania and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support the event.

“This conference seeks to encourage governments, institutions, and households to prioritize energy efficiency. Doing so will not only conserve energy but also contribute significantly to environmental protection,” Diallo stated.

The REEC 2024 is expected to yield actionable recommendations for improving energy efficiency policies and accelerating the adoption of clean technologies. As the region grapples with the impacts of climate change, the conference represents a critical step toward fostering sustainable growth and reducing carbon footprints.
